Baby Bolognese Sauce

1 tbsp vegetable oil
1 medium finely chopped onion
1 stick finely chopped celery
2 clove garlic, crushed
2 medium carrots, peeled and grated
450 g lean minced beef
300 ml Passata & 2 dessert spoons tomato Puree
200 ml unsalted stock or boiling water
¼ tsp fresh thyme leaves or a pinch of dried thyme
a pinch of sugar


  1. Heat the oil in a saucepan and sauté the onion, garlic and celery over a low heat for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally until softened.
  2. Add the grated carrot and sauté for 4 minutes.
  3. Add the minced beef until browned, stirring occasionally.
  4. Add to the onion and carrot. Pour over the tomato passata & puree, boiling water or stock and add the thyme and pinch of sugar.
  5. Cover and cook over a low heat for about 15 minutes.

Adapting for your babies stage

This bolognese is suitable for the whole family.

Stage 1: about 6 months – Puree to a thin consistency using a blender.

Stage 2: 6-9 months – Ensure meat is finely broken up using a wooden/metal spatula to serve small baby shell pasta.

Stage 3: 9-12 months – Serve meat with lumps. Suitable pasta – penne, bow, spaghetti, fusilli. Encourage self feed.
